Master in Bioenergy

Educational objectives

Preparation of professionals with technical and scientific skills to intervene in the market for industries and services related to the production and management of energy from biomass and waste understood within the scope of the European Commission documents entitled “Energy for the Future: Renewable Power Plants - Green Book for Communitarian Strategy ”(COM (96) 576 final) and“ Energy for the Future: Renewable Power Plants - White Book for a Strategy and a Communitarian Plan of Action ”(COM (97) 599 final).

Skills

Capacity to evaluate the possibility of producing energy from biomass and waste, in order to contribute to the increase in energy production from renewable sources and to cover the needs of Portugal and other European countries in primary energy;

Ability to intervene in the energy production processes from these resources, seeking to optimize the processes themselves, increasing the efficiency of energy conversion and minimizing the environmental impacts resulting from it;

Capacity for the development of projects for the valorization of forest materials, in order to contribute to the reduction of the risks of forest fires and to the improvement of the local, regional and national economic situation;

Ability to intervene in the standardization and certification processes of products and systems for the production and transformation of materials that are valued from an energy point of view;

Contribution to the improvement of biomass energy recovery technologies, including cogeneration, co-gasification and joint pyrolysis technologies of materials of significant calorific value;

Ability to assess and manage the environmental impacts of energy production and distribution processes, obtained from biomass and energetically recoverable waste.

Professional Opportunities

The Masters in Bioenergy will be able to work in terms of production, quality control, and safety in activities related to the production of biomass and energy-enhancing resources, in the forestry, agricultural and waste recovery sectors, as well as in the development of new biofuels and improving existing production processes. They can also perform research and development tasks in different sectors, such as Universities, Polytechnic Institutes, and Industry. The Masters's will also be prepared for consulting tasks in Bioenergy.
